Breakaway Hardware

The Owl Side ladder has a weight limit of 400 lbs, and has been tested much higher. Its strength is vertical—climbing up and down or attaching equipment to the rungs. The steel bolts that fix the ladder to the top of the van have a shear strength of 700 lbs.

However, we purposely engineered a weak point in the ladder when a force is applied laterally. The bottom aluminum bolts will shear off if a heavy lateral load is applied to the ladder, such as getting hung up on a rock. This allows the bottom of the ladder to break free from the van and limit damage. This is the same concept used with deurailler hangers in mountain bikes.

Modularity

We build modularity into almost every product we sell. So, an Owl side ladder is more than just a side ladder. It can become a place for additional fuel, water, fishing rods, surfboards, or traction boards. By easily mounting items to the ladder's proprietary hole pattern, we open up a world of possibilities beyond simply going to the roof.
