Long Range Fuel Tanks for the Mercedes Sprinter
The factory tank in a current Sprinter 2500 holds 24.5 gallons. That's plenty for errands and a problem on a remote route, where the next fuel stop might be a full day away. A long-range Sprinter fuel tank from S&B nearly doubles that capacity and installs in the factory location. At 20 mpg, a 40- to 47-gallon tank gets you roughly 800 to 940 miles between fill-ups.
That extra range changes how you plan a trip. You can push deeper into remote regions and roll past the overpriced station at the edge of a national forest. On long highway days, it means fewer exits and more miles. If you run diesel appliances off the main tank, a bigger tank keeps those systems running longer between fills, too.
Both tanks are built from high-density crosslinked polyethylene and keep accurate fuel readings. Both add up to 1.5 inches of ground clearance compared with a standard tank, and both are street legal in all US states. The 45/47 gallon tank also adds an auxiliary heater port for Espar and other diesel heaters, so your heater can draw from the same tank as your engine.
If you fill up at truck stops, add the Large Diesel Fuel Filler Nozzle. Its oversized filler neck handles high-volume commercial pumps, so you skip the spills, slow fills, and constant auto shut-offs.
40 vs. 45/47 Gallon: Which Tank Fits Your Sprinter?
Choose the 45/47-gallon tank for maximum range unless you drive a Winnebago Revel. The 45/47 doesn't fit the Revel, so Revel owners should go with the 40-gallon tank.
40 gallon tank: Offered for 2007–2018 NCV3, 2019–2022 V6 4x4, and 2023+ four-cylinder AWD Sprinters, with 144-inch and 170-inch fitment on 2019+ vans. It includes straps and has no sump or drain.
45/47 gallon tank: Offered for 2007–2018 NCV3 and 2019–2025 VS30 Sprinters, with 144-inch and 170-inch fitment on 2019+ vans. It doesn't fit the Revel, Storyteller MODE XO, or 144-inch NCV3s with a factory ride height sensor.
Fit decides this one. If the 45/47 fits your van, it's the bigger of the two and the better pick for long-range journeys. Check under your van before you order either tank. Gray water tanks and other aftermarket equipment can make installation harder or impossible, and returns tied to that equipment are the buyer's responsibility.
