Step-by-Step Instructions for Installing Side Steps on a Sprinter Van
Installation Process:
Step 1: Preparing the Tools and Materials
- Gather all necessary tools: rivnut gun, drill bits, wrenches, and Allen wrenches.
- Have extra rivnuts on hand for practice or in case of mistakes.
Step 2: Installing the First Bracket on the Passenger Side
-
Mark the Position:
- Measure 15 inches from the front door seam on the passenger side.
- Use a Sharpie or pen to mark this spot as the center of your first bracket.
-
Position the Bracket:
- Hold the A-bracket against the van’s pinch weld (underbody lip).
- Align the fin on the A-bracket with the line you marked at 15 inches.
-
Mark the Drill Holes:
- While holding the bracket in place, mark the positions for the holes that will go through the pinch weld.
-
Drill Pilot Holes:
- Start by drilling pilot holes with a smaller bit (smaller than 1/4 inch) to ensure accuracy.
-
Drill Full-Size Holes:
- Switch to the 1/4 inch drill bit and enlarge the pilot holes.
-
Insert Bolts:
- Insert the bolts through the holes and secure the bracket to the pinch weld using the backing plate on the other side.
Step 3: Rivnut Installation
-
Drill Holes for Rivnuts:
- Use the 23/64 drill bit to drill into the van where the rivnuts will be installed.
- Ensure the holes are clean and free of burrs before proceeding.
-
Paint the Holes:
- Spray the drilled holes with Rust-Oleum rust reformer or any rust-inhibiting paint to prevent rusting.
-
Install Rivnuts:
- Use the rivnut gun to insert the rivnuts. Follow the instructions of the rivnut gun, ensuring they are crimped tightly.
-
Test the Rivnuts:
- Insert bolts into the rivnuts to ensure they are securely seated and not spinning.
Step 4: Attaching the Bracket to Rivnuts
-
Align the Bracket:
- Attach the A-bracket to the installed rivnuts using bolts with washers.
- Tighten the bolts, but don’t over-torque them.
-
Secure the Bracket:
- Attach the bracket to the pinch weld bolts and tighten everything down. Use the 7/16 and 9/16 wrenches to snug the bolts.
Step 5: Repeating for the Remaining Brackets
-
Measure and Mark:
- For subsequent brackets, measure 23 inches from the center of one A-bracket to the next.
- Mark the positions, and repeat the drilling, painting, and rivnut installation steps.
-
Install the B-Brackets:
- Attach the B-brackets to the A-brackets using bolts and washers.
- Ensure the B-brackets flow toward the back of the van.
Step 6: Attaching the Side Steps
-
Position the Side Step:
- Place the side step onto the brackets.
- Insert 3/8 bolts with washers through the step and into the bracket.
-
Tighten Everything:
- Adjust the height and position of the step to ensure proper alignment and tighten all bolts.
Step 7: Adding the Tread Plate (Optional)
-
Position the Tread Plate:
- Align the tread plate near the van’s door for easy access.
- Secure it with bolts through the step’s pre-drilled holes.
Final Checks:
- Double-check that all bolts are snug but not overtightened.
- Ensure all rivnuts are securely installed and not spinning.
- Adjust the side steps for a snug fit against the van's body.
