DIY Guide: Installing the Owl Side Ladder for Your Sprinter Van

Welcome, DIY enthusiasts! In this guide, we’re going to walk you through the installation of the brand-new Owl side ladder with mounting brackets. If you haven't seen it yet, check out our detailed video on the features of this ladder. It’s a fantastic product that we're really proud of. Whether you're an experienced installer or a weekend warrior, this guide will help you get the job done.

    Step 1: Assemble the Ladder

    1. Join the Sections:
      • Lay the top and bottom sections of the ladder on a soft surface (like a carpet) to avoid scratching.
      • Use the included 50/50 mount bolts to join the sections. These bolts slot into the mount, and no wrench is needed as the mount keeps the nuts captive.
      • Slide the bolts through from the outside and into the captive nuts on the inside.
      • Tighten until snug—no need for precise torque, just a good "guten tight" will do.

Step 2: Install the Upper Bracket

    1. Prepare the Bracket:

      • The bracket you receive will have a cut-out in the middle to accommodate different roof racks.
      • The accessory kit includes twist lock rails that fit into your roof rail and are secured with a bolt as you tighten.
    2. Mount the Bracket:

      • On the roof, position the twist lock rails parallel to the rail and slide them in.
      • Align the upper bracket over the rails and secure with washers and nuts. If you already have a roof rack, you may need to maneuver around it carefully.

    Step 3: Attach the Ladder

    1. Position the Ladder:

      • With the bracket loosely installed, position the ladder so you can adjust its height and alignment.
      • Use 3/8" bolts and nuts to attach the ladder to the bracket. For initial placement, you might skip the washer on one side to hold it temporarily.
    2. Adjust and Secure:

      • Once positioned, tighten the bolts. If the ladder needs adjustment, loosen the top bracket slightly to realign.
      • Ensure that the ladder is aligned with the body seam of the van for a neat look.

    Step 4: Secure the Bottom

    1. Drill and Install:

      • Using a 1/4" drill bit, drill through the pinch weld of the van at the bottom of the ladder.
      • Install the provided breakaway bolts and nuts. These aluminum bolts are softer, so thread carefully to avoid cross-threading.
    2. Paint the Holes:

      • After drilling, apply rust-oleum paint to prevent corrosion. Paint both the drilled holes and any exposed metal.

    Final Steps

    1. Check Everything:

      • Ensure all bolts are tight and secure.
      • Check for any loose items on the roof, including tools.
