Step-by-Step Instructions to Install Side Steps on a Ford Transit
-
Gather Your Tools
-
Prepare the Side of the Van:
- Driver’s Side: Measure from the front of the Ford Transit (around the door seam where the plastic meets the running board) back about 16 inches. This will mark the location of your first bracket. Make sure the front of the side step aligns with this seam for a balanced, aesthetic look.
- Passenger’s Side: Follow a similar measurement, ensuring your first bracket is around 16 inches back from the front feature.
-
Install the First Bracket:
- Use your tape measure to mark the position of the first bracket. Position the front edge of the step aligned to the previously measured point.
- Drill the holes where the first bracket will be attached. Use a 1/4-inch drill bit for this step.
- After drilling the holes, paint the exposed metal to prevent rust. You can use a piece of cardboard to avoid overspray.
- Attach the bracket to the Ford Transit by inserting bolts through the pre-drilled holes and using washers where necessary.
-
Install Subsequent Brackets:
- For the second bracket, place it roughly 38 to 42 inches back from the first bracket under the Ford Transit frame. It should be centered under the twin bolts located near that section of the van.
- For the third and last brackets, place one near the rear of the step (avoiding any holes in the body) and space the remaining bracket evenly between the others.
- Drill holes for each bracket following the same procedure as step 3, painting the exposed metal as needed.
-
Trim the Plastic (if necessary):
- Instead of removing the entire plastic underbody trim on the Ford Transit, it’s easier to trim out small sections where the brackets will attach.
- Use a sharp knife or cutoff tool to carefully cut the bottom of the plastic where the bracket will be installed. The plastic that remains will hide the trimmed section and will not be visible after installation.
-
Install the Rivnuts:
- With the 23/64” drill bit, drill the holes for the rivnuts.
- Insert the rivnuts into the holes using the rivnut tool. Tighten until the rivnut is secure and doesn’t spin when you attempt to insert a bolt.
- Test the rivnuts by threading in bolts to ensure they’re tight enough.
-
Attach the Brackets to the Pinch Weld:
- After the rivnuts are installed, align the brackets to the pinch weld on the Ford Transit.
- Secure the brackets with the pinch weld bolts, ensuring the brackets are snug but not overtightened.
-
Install the B-Brackets:
- Attach the B-brackets (the ones with the chunk cut out for the front) to the A-brackets using 9/16 bolts and washers.
- The B-brackets should flow towards the back of the Ford Transit when installed correctly.
- Loosely attach the brackets and leave room for adjustments later.
-
Align the Side Steps:
- Align the side steps on the brackets. Make sure the steps are parallel to the ground.
- Adjust the B-brackets if necessary to ensure the steps are level.
- Once everything is aligned, tighten all bolts and brackets securely.
-
Final Touches:
- Install the tread plates on the steps. These provide extra grip when entering or exiting the Ford Transit and can be adjusted to your preference.
- Secure the tread plates with bolts, ensuring they are placed near the door opening for optimal use.
-
Torque Check and Reinstallation:
- Make sure all bolts are torqued down to secure the side steps, but avoid overtightening. Stainless bolts are softer, so over-torquing can strip them.
- Check all rivnuts to make sure they are still tight and secure after installation.
-
Inspect and Test:
- Double-check all the hardware to ensure the side steps are securely attached to the Ford Transit. Test by stepping on them to ensure they are stable.
-
Maintenance Tip:
- If you plan to take your Ford Transit off-road, it’s important to re-torque all bolts periodically to ensure nothing loosens over time due to vibration or wear.
