Install | Expedition Handle
Step-by-Step Instructions for Installing the Expedition Handle on Your Sprinter Van
Step 1: Understanding the Expedition Handle
- The Expedition Handle is designed to replace your existing handle on the Sprinter Van. It is compatible with carrying a single Rotopax jug.
- While it has been tested for one Rotopax jug, using multiple jugs is not recommended due to potential stress on the handle.
Step 2: Installing the Rotopax Mount on the Expedition Handle
- To install the Rotopax mount, begin by screwing the provided bolts through the handle and into the Rotopax mount.
- Make sure the bolts are securely fastened. This setup allows you to mount a single Rotopax jug on your Sprinter Van.
Step 3: Removing the Existing Handle and Tire Lock
- To remove your existing handle, first, remove the lock on your Sprinter Van’s wheel if applicable.
- Then, unscrew the handle by rotating it counterclockwise until it comes off. Ensure that the tire is secured tightly when reattaching any components, as a loose tire can move during driving.
Step 4: Adjusting the All-Thread for Wheel Offset
- If you notice that the all-thread sticks out too far, especially if you have thinner factory wheels on your Sprinter Van, you can adjust the length.
- To shorten the all-thread, remove the existing nut, then remove the all-thread from the ladder or mounting point.
- Screw the extra nut provided onto the back of the all-thread and tighten it to act as a spacer. This will pull the all-thread closer to the vehicle, adjusting for the thinner wheel or different offset.
- Reassemble the handle, ensuring the washers, locking nut, and other components are in place before tightening everything down.
Step 5: Safety Update – Properly Securing the Handle
- When installing the Expedition Handle (or a standard handle), ensure that the handle is screwed past the locking hole of the all-thread.
- If the handle is not screwed far enough, especially with wider tires, it could leave the handle gripping only the end of the all-thread, which is not strong enough to hold the tire securely.
- The handle must be fully threaded beyond the hole to guarantee it is safely secured.
- If the all-thread does not reach far enough, contact customer support for a longer all-thread option.
Step 6: Locking the Rotopax Mount on the Expedition Handle
- To securely mount the Rotopax jug onto the Expedition Handle of your Sprinter Van, start by placing the jug onto the Rotopax mount.
- Rotate the mount spindle so that the square section locks into the jug, preventing it from rotating.
- Tighten the spindle by turning it clockwise until the jug is firmly secured.
- To lock the Rotopax in place, insert the locking tumbler into the mount and turn the key until it locks.
- Remove the key, and your Rotopax is now securely mounted.
Step 7: Removing the Rotopax Jug
- To remove the Rotopax jug, start by unlocking the tumbler with the key and removing the locking mechanism.
- Loosen the spindle by rotating it counterclockwise until the square section releases from the jug.
- Once loose, rotate the handle flat and remove the jug from the mount.
