Install | 1up Bike Tray

Step-by-Step Instructions for Installing the 1up Vertically on the Sherpa Carrier for Your Sprinter Van

Step 1: Understand the Installation Kit

  • If you are installing a 1up bike rack vertically on the Sprinter Van's Sherpa carrier, you will use a different kit than the one for horizontal bike rack installation.
  • The vertical kit includes cables and specific hardware designed for the vertical mounting on the Sherpa.

Step 2: Prepare the Hardware and Mounting Points

  • The hardware kit comes with shorter pieces than the horizontal mounting kit, as they do not need to extend as far. These pieces will slide into the channels of the Sherpa plate.
  • Identify the slots on the Sherpa where you will mount the 1up. For vertical mounting, pick appropriate spots, one towards the top and one towards the bottom of the Sherpa plate.

Step 3: Attach the 1up Mounting Hardware

  • Slide the bolts into the Sherpa's slots. Place the mounting bracket of the 1up rack in position.
  • Hold the 1up rack against the Sherpa plate, aligning the bolts. Once positioned, loosely screw the nuts onto the bolts to hold the 1up in place.

Step 4: Adjust the Position of the 1up Rack

  • Before fully tightening the bolts, adjust the height of the 1up rack to ensure it is vertical and properly positioned. You can raise or lower the rack depending on your preference, giving you the option for a higher or lower departure angle.
  • Once satisfied with the positioning, tighten the nuts using a 9/16 wrench to secure the 1up rack to the Sherpa on your Sprinter Van.

Step 5: Install the Vertical Cable Kit

  • After mounting the 1up rack, install the vertical cable system provided in the kit. The cable helps secure the rack and bike.
  • Take the small bolt from the hardware kit and install it from the inside out through the designated hole. Loop the cable through the bolt and tighten it down using a wrench.

Step 6: Secure the Cable

  • Ensure the 1up is positioned at a 90-degree angle to the ground before securing the cable.
  • Once both cables are in place, use the button-head bolt with a large washer and thread it through the center of both cables.
  • Tighten a nut on the back of the bolt to secure the cables, ensuring they are tight and firm.

Step 7: Install the Second 1up Rack

  • For the second 1up rack, repeat the same process as the first. The only difference is that you will be mounting it in the lower section of the Sherpa plate.
  • Choose a position that keeps the 1up racks evenly spaced. You can run them at the same height or stagger the height if needed for clearance with handlebars.

Step 8: Adjust for Bike Clearance

  • If you are mounting two bikes, especially if they have different frame geometries, adjust the height of the racks to avoid interference between handlebars.
  • For two identical bikes, you may choose to adjust the bottom tray slightly up or down to prevent the bikes from hitting each other.

Step 9: Tighten Everything Down

  • Once everything is positioned correctly, fully tighten the nuts on the back of the bolts using the wrench.
  • Attach the cable to the bottom tray in the same manner as the top tray, securing both 1up racks vertically on the Sherpa carrier of your Sprinter Van.
